Happy Friday! This week highlights a beautiful landscape beloved by the renowned Georgia O’Keefe: Plaza Blanca.
Plaza Blanca: Artistic Inspiration
When Georgia O’Keefe came to New Mexico, she was awed by the natural beauty of “The White Place”, or Plaza Blanca. Fans of her work might recognize this iconic landscape from her paintings. Plaza Blanca lies in the valley of the Rio Chama mountains, near the town of Abiquiu. Hollywood saw the same allure Georgia O’Keefe did and filmed several movies in the area, including the 2013 film The Lone Ranger.
We here at Touch the Southwest love the beauty of this area, so much so that we created a tour showcasing it! This tour focuses on the many artists who, for decades, have found inspiration in the natural beauty of Abiquiu and its surroundings. The experience begins with a visit Ghost Ranch, former home of famed artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, to see several of the locations where she painted some of her most iconic canvases. Then, the tour also goes to the studios of some of the well known contemporary artists who now call Abiquiu home. The tour includes lunch at the Abiquiu Inn and finishes up at the Po’eh Cultural Center to see the work of popular contemporary sculpture, Roxanne Swentzell (www.roxanneswentzell.net).
