An art colony and home of the Earthship, Taos is a place of rich spiritual traditions, adobe architecture, fine art galleries, world class museums, and Taos Pueblo, a World Heritage Site.  Today, you’ll travel the backroads through the beauty of northern New Mexico as you head up and back to Taos, stopping to visit a variety of unique sites and points of interest.

This morning you’ll take the High Road to Taos, stopping at the El Santuario de Chimayo Shrine.  Along the way you’ll pass through Indian pueblos and old Spanish Land Grant villages, seeing the Church of San Jose de Gracia and the Church at San Francisco de Asis Mission, photographed by Ansel Adams and painted by Georgia O’Keeffe.

Taos Mission

Once in Taos, you’ll visit and see the Taos Pueblo, if it’s open -the tribe reserves the right to close the pueblo at any time, usually for ceremonies and honoring tribal members.  If the pueblo is closed, we will visit the Millicent Rogers Museum.  Having one of the finest art collections in the southwest, the museum celebrates the arts and cultures of the southwest.  Next, it’s lunch at a local Taos restaurant where you can try the green chili, New Mexico’s signature dish.  After lunch wander the Taos Plaza browsing its shops and galleries.  Then, it’s off to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge before heading back to Santa Fe.
